Lawmakers have been taking action to address mental health issues in our state.

On Tuesday, House lawmakers moved three bills forward with bipartisan support.

House File 2529 would create 12 new psychiatric residency programs through the University of Iowa. Lawmakers say the goal is to attract and train more psychiatrists in Iowa.

House File 2549 would add $1 million a year to expand loan forgiveness opportunities for new prescribing mental health providers in our state.

House File 2546 would require the Department of Human Services to establish a Medicaid rate for those needing a higher level of inpatient psychiatric care. Lawmakers hope this will increase funds to those in the mental health field.
