IA House and Senate Republicans Announce Joint Budget Targets for FY 2024

On Thursday, April 20, the Iowa House and Senate Republicans released their joint targets for the Fiscal Year 2024 budget.  The total spending for FY 2024 is $8.516 billion. This represents 88.25% of ongoing revenue. 

"Republicans in the Statehouse have proven time and time again that we can lower the tax burden while adequately funding Iowans' priorities," said House Appropriations Chairman Gary Mohr (R-Bettendorf)  "These budget targets represent significant investment into the things we hear about from Iowans the most such as education, mental health care, and workforce initiatives. This is the result of the disciplined, responsible budgeting principles of Iowa House Republicans that continue to put the state in a strong financial position."

DMR: Iowa House passes new limits on when carbon pipeline companies could use eminent domain

Carbon capture pipeline companies would need to reach voluntary deals to buy 90% of the land on their route before they could seek to use eminent domain, under a bill passed Wednesday by the Iowa House.

The bill's House passage is a big step forward for opponents of the pipelines, who are worried they could be forced to sell their land to the companies if the state grants them eminent domain powers.

DMR: Iowa Poll: Iowans narrowly favor $2M cap on pain and suffering in major malpractice cases

By a narrow margin, a plurality of Iowans favor a new $2 million limit on damages for pain and suffering in major medical malpractice cases, a new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll shows. 

Forty-seven percent of Iowans support the law, while 44% are opposed. Another 10% are not sure.
